For the students of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Sr. Thomasann Quinn has been more than a teacher or administrator—she has been a guiding presence, a source of warmth, and a beloved part of the school’s fabric for 39 years. Though she taught science, math, and religion for 26 of those years, her “retirement” in 2011 changed only her title, not her dedication. She remained ever-present—planning religious services, engaging with students, and filling the school with Franciscan joy.

Students often sought her out, knowing they’d be met with kindness—and maybe even a gummy bear. “I’m known as the gummy bear nun,” she laughed, a nickname from her early days at OLMC when she used treats to keep students engaged.

Her teaching journey began in Spokane, Washington, eventually leading her to schools across Oregon and Pennsylvania, including 12 years as a principal. Yet, her heart was always in the classroom at OLMC. “I couldn’t shake my yearning to be with the children,” she said. She especially loved teaching math and science, using hands-on lessons to spark wonder. “You can’t teach science without seeing God’s hand in creation,” she said. “It’s like peeling back nature and seeing God in action.”

That deep faith and love defined her ministry. She saw teaching as more than academics—she nurtured the whole child. “From my first days in the classroom, I knew that sharing my joy would help students realize they, too, were good and loved by Jesus,” she reflected. “Most of all, I wanted them to have joy.” Sr. Thomasnn officially stepped away from OLMC in 2024. As she celebrates her 70th jubilee this June, her legacy remains in the countless students she has inspired. Though her time at the school has ended, the love, faith, and joy she shared will live on.
