IHM Sisters, March 11: connecting in today’s world, sharing initiatives that make a difference
Fifty-two weeks a year, women religious stand with the poor and immigrants, teach children, fight injustice, heal the sick, share spirituality, empower women, defend the planet, promote peace and create community. But for one week, March 8-14, the spotlight shines on them. We invite you to help celebrate National Catholic Sisters Week.
Beginning on March 8, we will highlight how IHM Sisters connect in today’s world and share initiatives that make a difference. We invite you to engage with them in your own way #CatholicSistersWeek #CelebratingTraditions #ChangingtheWorld

For decades, the IHM community was largely self-sufficient. St. Mary Farms supplied food, not just to the Motherhouse sisters, but to the convents of the sisters ministering in and around Monroe and Detroit — “going local” long before it was commonplace.
Sister Loretta Schroeder delights in caring for our IHM gardens and the grounds at River House. St. Mary Organic Farm (SMOF) is a two-acre community organic garden that began in 1998. It is dedicated to the renewal of local, sustainable food. Traditional plots, as well as raised beds, are available for lease. New and seasoned gardeners grow food, flowers—and community. Some of the organic produce grown supports the local food pantry.
Gardeners are a diverse group of IHM Sisters, Associates, staff and local families. They grow organic food and flowers to inspire, enjoy and educate on environmental responsibility and healthy living. SMOF offers educational programs, meditations and a monthly newsletter.
